I revisited the very same Panera Bread to think back on the amazing ideas and energy of that remarkable day. To watch the video of my visit, please click here.

August 2008 to September 2008

"Faith and doubt are both needed - not as antagonists, but working side by side to take us around the unknown curve."

– Lillian Smith

An eBook.

That's what I needed to make, but what was it exactly? I didn't know for sure.

I was embarrassed to ask the group directly so I asked a question that didn't make me sound quite as lost as I really was.

"How would you do it?"

The ensuing conversation was the best education I had in years. My right hand cramped trying to write down all the great advice everyone was sharing.

I learned that an eBook was simply an electronic book that people could download and read on their computers. I could create it in Microsoft Word, export it as a PDF file, and sell it for a price on my website.

The process made sense on the surface and seemed doable, but one thing in particular worried me as soon as I started to get excited about the whole idea: what would I put in the book? Everything that anyone needed to pass the LEED exam was already freely available on my website. Why would anyone pay for the same information when they could already get it for free?

I expressed my concern to the group.

"Don't worry about it," one person explained. "People will pay if it does the job. If it provides any sort of value, people will pay for it."

Another person added, "An eBook is more convenient. It may be the same information that you have on your website, but it'll be packaged and more convenient for people to read. People pay for convenience. Not everyone wants to study from a website."

One other person put it bluntly when he said, "What have you got to lose?"

Nothing.

I returned home from the meeting positively stoked. I couldn't go to sleep that night because I was too busy writing the outline for my eBook. I didn't know how I was going to sell it, what it was going to look like, or even what the title would be. I just knew that I had to compile all of the text on my website into a neatly ordered document, so I started with that.

I could figure out how to sell it later.

Every night I would put in three to four hours of work on the eBook. I didn't go out with friends. I didn't watch TV. I didn't play video games. I just hustled on my book.

The process was fun at first. I kept imagining what it would be like to actually sell a book to someone. That energy pushed me forward. After a few weeks, however, I started to struggle. I thought I would be done but formatting the eBook in Word so that it looked more like a workbook than a novel was proving to be quite difficult.
